Domestic trifles

I don’t usually sleep late, but I was in the middle of a lovely deep sleep this morning, dreaming about swimming at a beautiful beach and planning to rent a boat, when I heard my husband exclaiming loudly and moving things in the kitchen. This is not his usual routine.

Bleary, I wandered into the kitchen, to be hit with the overwhelming smell of artificial Christmas spices. My husband had two rolls of paper towels and was mopping up the floor. There was sticky liquid and shattered glass all over the floor and countertop and dripping down the cabinets. The dogs, always interested in new activities, were eagerly putting their noses in the middle of everything, and stepping where there were fragments of glass.

A cutting board that leans against the wall had fallen against a bottle of IKEA non-alcoholic punch. One disadvantage of a stone floor is that nothing survives a drop.

Not a catastrophe, but, with the dogs’ feet safe, the mess cleaned up, and the floor only marginally sticky, it is 5:45 and I am still not awake. Not even the vacuum cleaner woke me up, and as the sun rises, I long to crawl back into bed.

But I do feel we had a lucky escape. That punch smelled terrible.

Also, thank God it wasn’t the bottle of Bordeaux.

Your morning gratuitous dog photo. Eli is keeping an eye on the turkeys.

  1. Quite an auspicious start to your morning. Glad the pup’s paws are all right and the Bordeaux is safe. Perhaps a nap later in the day will make up for the way too early start to your day. Love seeing Eli scoping out the turkeys.❤️

  2. I so enjoy your blog! Your life sounds so normal! 🙂 I especially loved yesterday’s message about your new bucket mouse catcher! We have one, too. It didn’t work, but maybe we didn’t have enough peanut butter spread on it OR it might have been those dog treats that made yours work! We don’t have a dog anymore, but I so enjoy hearing about your trio!

    • Thanks for the kind words. I only caught one mouse in the bucket, and didn’t bother with it last night. Caught one in the smaller humane trap, though. That makes seven caught, and three empty traps. We’re making progress!

  3. I am grateful for every so-called gratuitous photo of Auggie and Eli. There are spaces in life where I feel more acutely the poignancy of sharing my existence with our dogs, when the joy, the gratitude, and the fleetingness of it all bring a feeling of such deep sweetness. And I know I am blessed.

  5. 😂 omg! I could literally see this entire event unfold in my mind’s eye. You deserve a nice nap (and soon!). Charlie deserves a nice glass of that Bourdeaux.
