  1. 55 degrees is not good. You should have put it in a cooler and set it in your garage. I made cioppino for Christmas, so fully understand your reticence.🙁

  2. Yes sadly. Seafood not refrigerated will make you very sick. Not worth the risk. I’ve done it myself and I was so  mad at myself all week. It happens…

    • Wow, a long link. But anyway, this is where you want your look. I believe it’s by 2 hours in the danger zone it needs to be consumed, but you can check me.

  3. I will take food chances on things which I know can stand a sturdy reheating to 165,° but never on anything delicate and definitely never with anything seafood! (I have to admit I needed to Google “cioppino,” because my upbringing did not include much that was Italian. Or seafood, really!)

  4. YES – it must be thrown out. I would personally leave it be until my garbage disposal is working (assuming you have one). I’m surprised the refrigerator got that warm since last night but everything may be at risk now. It might be colder outside in the blizzard – in which case I say get out your igloo or yeti freezers and store outside. I am saying it must be discarded with clinical confidence, having spent several of my doctoral years manning the telephones a Poison Center and instructing people to take ipecac before the food poisoning hit.

    • Haha. I hear you. And honestly, I already knew the truth, but didn’t want to waste my beautiful cioppino. I bought new milk and rescued some meat from the other fridge and that’s now nestled outside in the snow. Later I will check the freezer, but I have time there.

  5. Oh noooo!!!
Maybe put it in a waterproof, airtight container and bury it in the snow?
I’m very cautious about food safety but cioppino? All attempts to save it must be made!
I got a nasty stomach bug over the holidays which I passed on to my husband and visiting family. The only one not to succumb was our son, who is a great cook but (IMO) very reckless about food storage. He believes there’s a correlation😂

  6. During this time of year, I place food on my unheated breezeway to cool. I consider it my walk-in cooler. It’s 20* here and falling, your food will not spoil outdoors. Hopefully you won’t need it out long enough to freeze.

    • I should have! But I didn’t expect the outage to last this long. This is the dilemma: leave the door closed so the cold stays in; or open it right away and put everything outside.

  7. Curious. No way to get a generator and an in-ground propane tank where you are? We build a retirement house in SC and the builder said “Why? You are just wasting your money!” Joke’s on him. With climate change, it’s been triggered on several times in just our first two years!
