Support Your Local Author

I have two full days with nothing on my calendar, and a substantial but unfinished manuscript, which means it’s time to read through the new book on paper. Every once in a while I need to step back from writing and read what I have so far as an actual book. That way I can see the plot line and get a sense of how the story flows. There’s always a lot of literal cutting and pasting, which I often prefer to do the old fashioned way. One dog nose, phone call, or other interruption and it’s too easy for computer cuts to disappear into the ether.

So, while I attend to my work, I thought it might be a good time to remind you that you can catch up on my series by purchasing the first four novels now, or, should you prefer, pick up a little children’s book, My Dog Pete (available exclusively at the link) to add to someone’s Easter basket. It’s on Kindle, too.

You don’t have to buy my novels or essays from the guys in Seattle. Let’s face it: civilization needs local bookstores, and if we want them, we need to patronize them. Some of my favorite bookstores include Honest Dog Books, Books & Company, Boswell Book Company, and Politics and Prose. You can also order at Barnes & Noble, Target, or WalMart.

Or maybe you can find the time to follow me on Goodreads—where my numbers are pathetically few—or to leave a nice review wherever you buy books.

And, of course, you can also pre-order the one I’m working on now—the fifth in the series— if you haven’t already. You have, right?

Now available for pre-order wherever you buy your books.

If you have a favorite bookstore, leave a link in your comments, so others can find it.

Thank you!

  1. So, we just moved north of the tension line and just south of the state line. My college roommate lives nearby, though we are both from Northern California. She has started reading your books and mentioned last weekend she has so many questions… I’m hoping we can get a JF Riordan book club together as we are just 54 minutes from Milwaukee and we are kind people with nice friends! We are both looking forward to Throwing Bears for George in September and my husband bought a book gift card for my birthday in anticipation of the book’s release. Enjoy your day and thank you for all the hours of good reads!

  2. I love your writing. I preordered “Bears for George” a few weeks ago. Once it arrives at Politics and Prose, I will be in line to purchase a few for friends. I re-read “My Dog Pete” each week. It is also on the book shelves of several friends grandchildren. Thank you for your exquisite writing.

  3. Our local bookstore is the Seminary Cooperative Bookstore in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. The main store is on Woodlawn Ave., just off the University of Chicago campus, and 57th Street Books a couple of blocks away is also a part of the Coop. It is a warren of rooms half above ground in an apartment building at the corner of 57th St & Kimbark Ave. They stock more fiction as well as a huge section of children’s books. Sem Coop is a not for profit bookstore, used to be an actual cooperative, now supported by those of us who are members as well as by donations.

  4. I LOVE your books and can hardly wait for “Throwing Bears for George” to become available! It has been preordered already. Now it looks like Pete has to join the ranks, so my grandsons get the benefit of your writing as well. Thank you for your beautiful – and smart – imagination and for putting it all down in written form!

  5. I have read your first two novels… they are a wonderful read. (Thinking of moving to W.I. but will avoid Stella ;). Love Fiona, Rocco, and quirky Robert. “Reflections on a life in exile” is next and I will be ordering your next two novels as birthday gifts to myself. Can’t wait!

  6. These books are wonderful. I remember reading A Small Ernest Question as if the book was on fire. I didn’t want to put it down. I kept telling myself to slow down enjoy the journey. Nope, read it in like two days. I was so sad, but I have read it again to myself and out loud to another. There are so many layers to the stories, characters and moments that make you smile and laugh out loud. I can hardly wait for Throwing Bears for George —hurry September, hurry! 🤣

  8. Me again, I forgot to mention the essays. They are beautifully written and there is definitely something for everyone in the 2 books. And, if anyone knew Pete—they MUST own a copy of My Dog Pete. If they didn’t, the book is a beautiful story of an incorrigible rescue dog. Now, back to your regular programming—sometimes I just crack myself up. 🙄

  9. Absolutely love your books, novels and essays. Also, love to support local bookstores, which are disappearing faster than you can imagine.

Thank you for the links to others. I recall buying one of your autographed books from Honest Dog Books. They went the extra mile when I mistakenly selected “pick-up” instead of mailing. As I live in north metro Atlanta, it would have been quite a drive!

They didn’t have an autographed copy, but thankfully followed up with you to see that I received one! You don’t get that kind of service from the big book stores.
