It’s a Blizzard

Or close enough.

We woke to steadily falling snow. The wind is whistling through the eaves like the sound effects in a particularly corny old movie, and the predicted snow totals have risen to a minimum of nine inches. We already have at least six, and it’s supposed to snow all day.

The dogs are in the kitchen, lying on their tummies to better savor their breakfasts of turkey bacon and eggs. There is a fire here, and fresh tulips on the mantel. My cup of coffee steams nearby.

People are stranded on the local highways, and I am betting the blowing snow makes the rural roads impassable. Semis are unable to make their way up minor slopes on the freeways. I hope they will all be merely inconvenienced.

I had planned to run out this morning on a minor errand, but that seems unnecessary. I cancelled the electrician, thinking that standing on a ladder working on light posts seemed unpromising in this weather. He seemed to agree.

Very soon I will need to bestir myself to accompany the dogs on a morning walk. Eli will not go without me, but I don’t mind. I have boots and a good parka, and sufficient inner child to find it fun.

I may have to spread the 160 pounds of bird seed I bought yesterday a bit sooner than planned. I saw the deer chewing on brush yesterday, and things will be harder now. Another child’s adventure.

The local weather guy says we may or may not meet the specific criteria for a blizzard, but why quibble?

Seems like a perfect day to stay home and design new cocktails for Roger.
If you know, you know.

  1. The best place to be on a day like today, curled up on a nice soft dog bed next to the fireplace. It doesn’t get much better than that. Just a dusting up here in the Fox Valley but the worst is yet to come!

  2. Falling heavily at my house. We may venture out for a nearby errand (no highway or freeway travel!) just for the sheer adventure or it, or we may not.

My glee at the spectacle, as aways, is tempered by my sympathy for those who do have to be out in this kind of weather, though.

  3. I’m sitting, patiently waiting for the storm to hit. We are in the 8 to 12 inches area and there is a chance of freezing rain in the mix. The wind increased overnight and it certainly makes it colder outside. The dogs have been walked and played with. Now they have decided to go back to bed. I’m ready for whatever the weather brings. The peacefulness is wonderful. Stay safe.

  4. I envy you the snow!!! I hope you have a wonderful day today. I do hope you get the seed out for the birds and deer, but not buried by the falling snow??

  5. So fascinated by the lives of you snowbound folks. Today’s posting filled me with a dozen questions. Do you plan well in advance purchasing extra groceries for the onslaught of snow and ice? What about electric/gas/wifi loss? Are services severely disrupted? Keep in mind my questions probably appear naive, but in Los Angeles we citizens had a hissy fit last weekend when high winds eliminated all electric/gas/and internet for a mere 4 hours. You snowbound folks are an admirable, hardy crowd.

    • We do plan ahead. Grocery stores and gas stations are busy in the days before. Wisconsin has an award-winning power grid, and although we may lose power, it’s usually up again very quickly. We are used to this. Roads will probably be clear and dry by tomorrow morning, unless the wind blows over the roads. It’s all about having the right equipment. We all—some with mostly insincere grousing—take great pride in our hardiness. 😎Besides, it’s fun!

      • Absolutely! I bet it’s fun with a wonderful dose of coziness being tucked in with pups before your fireplace. Stay warm and safe, all ye hardy folks.

  6. As we face the tail end of the front that brings you snow, we’re hunkering down for wind and thunderstorms. Oh, well. We’re handling it the way you do. Prepare ahead, stay inside, and just enjoy the quiet time while we can. Stay safe and send pictures!

  7. Because I have to leash walk Winston… it took me longer to bundle up than it did for him to decide not to stay out longer than absolutely necessary! And this will be repeated throughout the entire day! I’m hoping for him to take very, very long naps today! 🙂 C

    • Been there. This morning I literally pushed Eli out the door, and a moment later could hear him flinging his full weight against the door to come back in. But when I got up to get him, I looked out and he and Auggie were joyfully romping. Sometimes, you just have to wait it out.

  11. Ah, Roger! One of my favorite characters in your books! Enjoy the snow! Stay safe. We’re supposed to get some snow here in Arkansas, along with bitterly cold temps! I like snow, not the temps!
