I buy the jumbo amaryllis sold in a set of 3 at Costco in November each year. They are sold for $23 and make wonderful gifts to my neighbors and friends. They need no care at all and when completely finished blooming, they are planted in my backyard. I do live in Southern California—so easy to do. Love getting random, photos and stories! Your post evokes a loving memory from my youth. My Dad loved musicals, and as children, my sister and I grew up listening to every popular musical to hit Broadway. Some were adapted to film, and of course, we saw them all. Usually, with him.
Your “dramatic” Amaryllis blooms reminded me of “The Music Man” starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. Shirley Jones is Marian, the librarian who also teaches piano lessons to young students. One such student, as I remember, was Amaryllis. That name so fascinated me that I never forgot it. Imagine my surprise as I grew up and learned that it was a flower!
Now In my senior years, I so appreciate the experiences Dad provided us. Thank you for bringing these memories to light. I’ll bet you had no idea a simple picture of an amaryllis bloom could bring such joy!
