I could never do it to Auggie, could you? They both love saltines. I had no idea. But, oh, the crumbs! Good thing I washed all the bed linens today. Oh, wait.
Whatever they want! Whenever my pups do something I would rather they didn’t, I think of my late great Corgis and Airedale and my beautiful missing cat and truly wish they could be here making mischief.
My Shepherds also like crackers, especially Carr’s Table crackers I buy at Costco, which are round but otherwise a lot like saltines except perhaps with LESS salt? They consider them to be treats, especially with some peanut butter on them. Your kids are so beautiful! Ingrid
I think it’s because they like salt. I recall my sister’s dog would lick the bottom of my feet only to find out that it was because of the salt we humans excrete, and they love salt.
LOVE these big guys, with or without cracker crumbs!
Years ago, I was dog-sitting a lovely big terrier mix called Rags. His Mom left me detailed written notes about his many dietary needs and no-no’s, and his allergy medications, etc. At bed time, after we had done the walk and all that, we settled into the TV room and he sat and stared at me, paced around, stared, looked indignant, and paced. Nothing I did seemed to be the right response. Turns out that Mom left out one important ritual in her notes … at bedtime, he was to be given four saltines from a tin beside the recliner (where I was sitting)! No wonder Rags thought I was deficient. He didn’t settle for quite a while. . So … as your boys have now experienced the delight of crackers in bed, I recalled what Rags’ Mom once said … with dogs, you do it once in a row and it’s tradition.
It is truly lovely to spend time smiling at your dog photos and your sweet stories of life in the country. Thanks again! You’re good tonic!
Our Weimaraners love crackers everywhere, it becomes a fight to try to clean up because they’re looking me saying, “hey those are good pieces, don’t through them away!”
Every time we eat chili, I have oyster cracker beggars. You would think I was giving them the finest cut of filet mignon! But since oyster crackers aren’t available here in Spain, I’ve been a bit more stingy. I have to rely on visitors having space in their suitcase to bring me a bag or two in return for boarding at our home. 😉🤣🤪
Crumb free saltines — there’s an innovation that would change the world!

Pretzels e a popular choice here too. I also found a use for pork rinds/chiaronnes.
